About Philippines

The Philippines have emerged from the doldrums after a disappointing home campaign in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 and seem ready to climb back to the top rung of ASEAN football.

After three straight semi-final appearances, a lot was expected of the Azkals in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016.

Their sterling efforts had helped bring the AFF Suzuki Cup Group Stages to the Philippines for the first time and they were keen to put on a show for the home fans.

As it transpired, it was all a bit of a damp squib with the Philippines failing to qualify for the last four after finishing third in Group A.

Their American coach Thomas Dooley set about freshening the side after the AFF Suzuki Cup setback with a spot in the AFC Asian Cup 2019, the new target.

That objective was achieved in March 2018 with a come from behind 2-1 home win over Tajikistan seeing the Philippines top their group and book a place in the AFC Asian Cup finals for the first time.

The Philippines put the chastening experience of AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 firmly behind them with an unbeaten run in the year-long qualifying campaign.

Three wins and three draws gave them 12 points and a two-point advantage over second placed Yemen.

The icing on that particular cake came in mid-April when the FIFA world ranking came out and the Philippines were in 113th spot - the highest in their history.

With the turnaround in their fortunes, the Philippines are sure to be in confident mood for their campaign at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018.
