About Cambodia

Cambodia were one of the success stories of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 with their young, adventurous team winning many admirers.

The players were feted by their countrymen from all walks of life after making it to the group stage for the first time since 2008.

There were wild celebrations inside the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh after Cambodia sealed their spot with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Timor-Leste in the final game of the Qualification Round.

Players took selfies with fans during the lap of honour and soaked up the adulation of the 50,000 spectators who packed the stadium.

The country’s Prime Minister Hun Sen, a sports lover, added his voice to the praise with a post on his Facebook page.

Cambodia topped the four-team group with nine points after wins over Laos (2-1), Brunei Darussalam (3-0) and Timor-Leste (3-2) to advance to the AFF Suzuki Cup finals where they were drawn against hosts Myanmar and former winners Malaysia and Vietnam in Group B.

Although they failed to pick up a point, Cambodia were far from overawed. They conceded two second-half goals in their 3-2 loss to Malaysia before being beaten 3-1 by Myanmar and 2-1 by highly fancied Vietnam.

Cambodia continued their football education in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and despite winning just one game - a 1-0 home victory over Afghanistan - there was no shortage of spirit or guile.

The Angkor Warriors are one of the nine seeded teams for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 and should prove difficult opposition, especially at home.
